The East India Company arrived in India to engage in trade for goods craved by Europe, only to find local political struggles irresistible, and opportunities for wealth—both private and public—incomparable. The history of intensive western cognitive as well as political engagements in matters of caste had started in the early 19th century, with earlier antecedents.
